My buddy just picked up a mint 2003 Yukon XL Denali for $4k, and I can get a semi-recent P71 for $1200, so that leaves me with $4300 to play with. I think I’d buy an 03 or 04 Jetta VR6 6-speed. Then I’d have the tow rig, the street legal drift car, and the reasonable daily.

I’ll start off with some $2500 Zoidbait http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/5845185457.html
Then a $2900 EP3 http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/5851550962.html
And lastly this 325xi manual wagon for $2700 http://richmond.craigslist.org/cto/5823450484.html
I’ll use the remaining $1400 to either put a K20A2 head onto the EP3 or invest in the bimmer.

I cannot think of or find ONE car from after the year 2003 costing less than $3500 that I would ever want to own, much less three. With that in mind, I have completed your task.

You’re the first to actually use carts. I’m surprised no one ever tosses a skateboard, a bike, or any other “vehicles.”

I have accepted your challenge. I’m sure that two of these cars would not be good cars to own. Here’s the only one I’d actually want, a 2006 Scion xB with 121,000 miles.
http://duluth.craigslist.org/cto/5829236015.html
Then an 03 Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible... a Truely lame car, but it fits the budget. It just needs some purple and silver decals, and big chrome wheels. It is at least a manual and it has the V6 instead of the Dodge Advenger 2.4l engine.
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ank/ctd/5855785063.html
Last am Automatic Nissan XTerra, I’ve heard these early XTerra are unreliable and this one has 188,000 miles.
http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ram/ctd/5855655320.html
The Scion is 3500, The Mitsubishi 3,000, and the Xterra 2,500 so 9,000 all together. And you get a daily, a “fun” weekend car, and a 4x4 winter beater/work truck.

The EP3 and the Beamer both don’t even looked totally clapped out, but I’m guessing they have about 550,000 miles on them combined,

Regular cab, long box trucks make me happy. They just look right. Like “that’s a truck” not a family sedan that has an open trunk, but a real truck.

You had me at Colbat XFE, you lost me on the Freestar, they are literally the worst ever mini van ever made. Too big, too heavy, and a huge 4.2 V6 that makes no power and drinks fuel.

148k on the EP3. No mileage listed on the Bimmer, so you’re probably right. To be fair, it was kind of a throw-in because I didn’t want all 3 cars in the list to be FWD Japanese hatchbacks. (Counting the Vibe as Japanese because it’s a Toyota underneath.)

I like the Windstar/Freestar because it’s huge and has a soft (rather than stiff), easy to modulate throttle.
The one my family has was fantastic for road trips. I’d take the backseat and could be comfortably asleep laying in a somewhat fetal position if I wanted to. With the extra room inside the minivan I could spread my legs out onto the seat while sitting up and enjoy reaching for snacks an arm’s length away to kill the time.
Unfortunately the family minivan (twas a 2000 Windstar) had its engine crap out on itself. I’d love to have one again. Don’t care for any of its downsides. As long as it is mechanically and electronically reliable.
